The Mitchell Map of 1755 Power of Place

The map featured prominently throughout the America250MI website is the historic Mitchell Map of 1755. Created by John Mitchell (1711–1768), this map was first published in 1755 and underwent several reprints during the latter half of the 18th century. When published, the map was officially titled "A map of the British and French dominions in North America, with the roads, distances, limits, and extent of the settlements, humbly inscribed to the Right Honourable the Earl of Halifax, and the other Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners for Trade & Plantations.”

As the most comprehensive map of eastern North America produced during its time, the Mitchell Map stands out not only for its historical significance but also for its impressive size, measuring approximately 6.5 feet wide by 4.5 feet high and originally printed in eight sheets. This remarkable cartographic work offers invaluable insights into the politics, geography and settlement patterns of the American colonial period, making it a fitting choice for our website.
